Comprise vs. Compose
These two words so often get mixed up that it has almost become acceptable to use them interchangeably. Just the other day, I saw an incorrect usage of comprise on a well-respected universityââ¬â¢s website. I had to make sure that I wasnââ¬â¢t the one who got them mixed up and went and looked it up. Sure enough, the university had used the incorrect phrase comprise of. *Need to use my red pen intensifies* Needless to say, marking up my computer screen didnââ¬â¢t do any good. So I thought Iââ¬â¢d write a blog post about it in case anyone needed the same type of clarification I did. The difference between comprise vs. compose Compose Something can be composed of separate elements. For instance: ââ¬Å"Wikipedia is composed of articles by many different volunteersâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Contributions from 15 volunteers may compose one Wikipedia article.â⬠Comprise Something comprises, or consists of, separate elements. ââ¬Å"Wikipedia comprises articles from many different volunteers.â⬠Another way to think of this is that a whole is comprised of parts ââ¬â and parts compose a whole. An excellent, very short explanation (but more complete than what Iââ¬â¢ve given) can be found in The Columbian Guide to Standard American English. Take a peek!

Tyrosine Kinases essays
Tyrosine Kinases essays In this experiment we will determine whether or not epidermal growth factors (EGF) stimulate target cells, through the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) (3). RTKs are transmembrane proteins that receive an extra cellular message, and transform it into an intracellular message. When inactive the RTKs reside as monomers in the lipid bylayer of the cell, until they are dimerized (2). At the same time of this dimerization the RTK then binds its ligand, EGF is a possible ligand. This action causes a conformational change that allows the RTK to be autophophorilated (1). Phosphorylation can happen on a few different side chains of the RTK. Such as serine, threonine, and tyrosine. We are concerned with the phosphorylation that occurs on the tyrosine. Phosphorylation of these side chains occurs at the exposed hydroxyl end of the amino acid. A hydrolysis reaction occurs and each dimmer yields phosphate groups to each other to allow the autophophorylation event (4). By knowing that the tyrosine side chains are phosphorylated we can perform a western blot and then using a specific antibody we determine if our EGF has caused the RTK to be phosphorylated (3). To start we took serum starved COS-7 cells that were ruffly 100 percent confluent, and were separated into a six well plate, and added to five wells different media. Before this we removed the existing media from the cells. In separate wells we added 2mls of acetyl choline 1ml/mg, EGF 2Ã µl/mg, 10% FCS, serum free media, and BSA 10ml/mg. We then incubated the plate for 30 min at 37C and 5% CO2. After the incubation we removed the media from the cells and added 150Ã µl of SDS ample buffer with othovanadate, pipetting up and down to remove the cells. We then transferred the cells to microfuge tubes and placed them in a water bath, boiling, for 5 min. We then preformed an SDS PAGE with six wells, the first five we ...

The Market Exposure of Three UK Mobile Company Essay
The Market Exposure of Three UK Mobile Company - Essay Example As computed in 2013, the number of registered customers of 3 telecommunication brand across the world is over 23.5 million. Ã There are a number of factors in the internal and external business environment of the telecommunication industry of the United Kingdom which leads to the vulnerability and added costs for the company, Three UK. The changes in the way people use mobile and internet technologies and the development of electronic commerce businesses are seen as opportunities for the telecommunication businesses, including Three UK. Ã Licensing of spectrums is an important business cost incurred by Three UK. The processes of the licensing of frequency bands for the telecommunication operators have high associated costs. The cost of spectrum licensing is the biggest cost incurred by Three UK. The company has to incur the costs of widening the network coverage through more spectrum allocation. For this, the company has set up numerous mobile network towers in various locations in the United Kingdom. For this purpose, either the company has to incur the fixed cost of setting up a new tower or it has to lease these operations to a third party company (Anselin, 2008). In both these cases, Three UK has to invest sufficient amount of money for the ultimate aim of a wider spectrum and network coverage. Also, the company has to continuously ensure that the licensing of frequency bands is acquired in an efficient manner so that the benefits of this kind of limited resource for the telecommunication business can be extra cted in the best possible manner.

Ethical Decision Making and Ethical Leadership Essay
Ethical Decision Making and Ethical Leadership - Essay Example The leaders, therefore, will discourage the worker from accepting the gift no matter the reasoning and justification. The email would look like ââ¬Ëââ¬ËDear officer, I am sorry to inform you that if you breach the companyââ¬â¢s rule that abhors acceptance of gift from customers then be ready to face the consequences. This rule should be followed at all times.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ This approach hampers the organizationââ¬â¢s democratic space where the views of others are not taken into account leading to the growth of an autocratic system. The management is likely to plunge into a culture where they impose strict self-centered rules. Over time, with the resistance and breach of these rigid rules, the leaders may escalate up the moral reasoning ladder making them adopt a more rational perspective in solving moral dilemmas in decision making. Moral reasoning is not complete at stage one and that is the reasoning why it is regarded as a reasoning pattern for children who do not have the capacity to rationalize between good and bad. They, therefore, have to blindly set or follow the laid down laws or regulations. Convection and post convection stages are eye-openers in moral

The Four Corner Hustlers Essay Example for Free
The Four Corner Hustlers Essay The Four Corner Hustlers originated on Chicagos Westside in the early 1970s. The organization was founded by King Walter Wheat and Freddy Malik Gauge. Shortly after the Four Corner Hustlers emerged, they became allied with the Vice Lords street gang, becoming a faction and adopting Vice Lord symbols and colors. The gang operated as a small group in the Austin neighborhood throughout the mid-to-late 1970s, often fighting area clubs and engaging in petty theft and vandalism. However, a group of Four Corner Hustlers began to operate in the Garfield Park and Austin neighborhoods. Lead by Monroe Money Banks, this group adopted the Black Diamond as a symbolic reference to their gang. In the late 1980s, Freddy Gauge died while incarcerated. Walter Wheat then took over the organizations operations solely. In the early 1990s, Monroe Banks proclaimed leadership over the entire organization but this was disputed by older high-ranking members of the gang. The tension and disagreements within the gang lead Walter Wheat to retire from the organizations leadership. Monroe Banks was later killed in a drug related murder in 1992. The 4CHs began to expand their bases of operation throughout the 1990s, growing substantially in number. A group of younger Four Corner Hustlers began to distance themselves from the Vice Lords and even rest away some of their territory, often times flipping Vice Lord members with the lure of drug spots. These Four Corner Hustlers charged a 50 percent tax on profit for the selling of narcotics as opposed to the traditional 75 percent. Many of these Four Corner Hustlers, whose main base of operation was in Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods used the Black Diamond. Amongst the Young Turks was Angelo Roberts. Angelo Roberts was given a leadership position in the organization by Walter Wheat due to his relationship with Wheats daughter, despite Angelo Roberts young age. As such, disputes for leadership positions continued. Due to turmoil in leadership, Walter Wheat reassumed his position in the organization. Walter Wheat was killed in 1993; Angelo Roberts was the principle suspect in orchestrating the hit. Angelo Roberts was arrested on drugs and weapons charges in the mid 1990s. After release, Angelo Roberts attempted to blow up the Area 3 Police station with high power weapons. He even made Americas Most Wanted as authorities pursued him across the United States. Angelo Roberts was killed in 1995, his body found frozen stiff in the trunk of a car. Several sets still pay homage to Angelo Roberts, adopting the moniker Angelo 4s. Ray Longstreet assumed leadership of the official branch of Four Corner Hustler around the time of Angelo Roberts death. His group still considers themselves a faction of the Vice Lords street gang, especially while in the correctional facilities. Ray Longstreet was recently released from prison in 2004 after serving a stint for drug charges. He was recently arrested again, this time by Federal authorities in Operartion Street Sweeper. The Four Corner Hustlers pride themselves in making money. The organization has grown tremendously within the last ten years or so, and have expanded throughout the Southside and far South suburbs. The 4CHs are an off-shoot of the Vice Lords, however, on the street most members consider themselves a separate entity. Most Four Corner Hustlers now consider themselves a separate Nation and often show their independence with the adoption of the Black Diamond symbol, while other 4CHs who still retain ties to the Vice Lords using the 5 point Star. However, all 4CHs align themselves with the Vice Lords while incarcerated forgoing any street antimosity. The gangs primary criminal involvement has consisted of graffiti, drug trafficking, assault, armed robbery, extortion, kidnapping, shootings, murder, and the renting out of drug turf to independent dealers. The organization has also been known to engage in the overseeing of solicitation of prostitution (pimping), the selling of illegal firearms, and the opening of front businesses to launder money.

Lost and Found in Walden :: Walden Essays
Lost and Foundà inà Walden Thoreau found himself at Walden - and lost himself on Ktaadn. Walden, a mile from town, was a benign experience in which he learned what he could do without, what was essential for life. Ktaadn, high and remote, taught him what he could not do without, what was essential life. He spoke of the hostility of the landscape. The mountain seemed to speak to him: "Why came ye here before your time? This ground is not prepared for you . . . I cannot pity or fondle you here, but (must) forever relentlessly drive thee hence to where I am kind." This landscape is hostile, not kind. It is "unforgiving and inhospitable to man" (Sidney). He responds to this imagined chastening with an apology, a verse explaining " . . . my way lies through your spacious empire up to light" - the way to light/enlightenment. The Web material illuminated somewhat Thoreauââ¬â¢s need for this experience - he had expressed a desire to "witness our own limits transgressed." He got what he came for. It seems to me that he did not anticipate such a terrifying experience, such utter alienation. Thoreau described this as "primeval, untamed, and forever untamable Nature" - "vast and drear and inhuman". "Man was not to be associated with it . . . It was Matter, vast, terrific, . . the home . . of Necessity and Fate." This was nature in its most primitive form. It did not allow, tolerate or acknowledge manââ¬â¢s control or manipulations, or even his need to comprehend. This is the same Matter from which our bodies are made, our physical nature. This is terrifying, alienating to Thoreau: "I stand in awe of my own body, this matter to which I am bound has become so strange to me . . . I fear bodies, I tremble to meet them." His purpose is met - he "witnesses his own limits transgressed". He senses that "his reason is dispersed." He tries to voice his feelings of alienation - and finds he is removed even from his voice, can only shout "Contact! Contact!" Wendy notes that Thoreau is "really failing at describing what he is trying to describe." Stacy notes that this passage is related to "a person getting a sense of their self in relation to Nature." The Web material describes Thoreauââ¬â¢s practice of linking landscape and identity.
